Cocoplum tree

Chrysobalanus icaco

The Cocoplum tree or shrub is a Florida native plant. Our Cocoplum in the Native Plant Garden is about 6 feet tall. It’s leaves are shiny green and oval to almost circular in shape. A fleshy fruit forms after flowering enjoyed by the birds. This tree is generally found in tropical climates in Central and South America and the Caribbean Islands. Aside from being used mainly as an ornamental shrub, the fruits are preserved or eaten raw. They are exported from Cuba, Brazil and Costa Rica. A tea is made from the bark which is used to halt dysentery. Take a walk in our garden and get acquainted with the Cocoplum specimen.
